Assessment of Possibilities
Since 2011 VEK offers a product called Assessment of Possibilities. VEK is asked frequently to check viability of horticultural initiatives for local food & flower production. Not always clients are willing to spend money for a full feasibility study or business plan (yet). By offering a ‘combined workshop with quickscan’, a project idea will be assessed by VEK specialists on short notice and for limited costs.
One of the first AoP projects was executed in Russia. A big chemical industry approached VEK of horticulture could be combined with their residual heat. On first hand, the initiative seemed quite promising because the Chelyabinsk Region is quite cold in winter. During the site-visit followed by a workshop about state-of-the-art horticulture, some obstacles and challenges were identified. Essential things were missing on the envisaged locations. Some examples were the size and slope of the plot, limitations related to zoning and pollution and a certain haze or mist in the valley which would have a negative influence on available sunlight.
The client also had plans to invest in CHP for power production. During the workshop, possibilities of combining CHP with horticulture were explained as well.
Result of the AoP was a report with a summary of the discussed topics, analysis of climate and translation towards required heat and power demand.
